Meet Your 2014 Junior Breakaway Roping Champion

Logan Beattie is one of the up and coming superstars of rodeo and this year in the Junior Breakaway Roping proved it. The Helena cowboy had a great year with winning more than $1700 in the regular season. Pulling a check at 40% of the rodeo’s from the year and winning 81% of the rodeo’s he pulled a check from. Those are some pretty good statistics for a 14 year old, winning all of it aboard Timmy the 2014 Jr Breakaway Horse of the Year. Beattie did not have the finals he wanted to have with missing his first calf and breaking out on the 2nd. He came into the finals with a just over a $300 lead over fellow Helena cowboy Jaxsen Petersen. There were a few different scenarios Jaxsen needed to take the 2014 NRA Junior Breakaway title away from Logan, unfortunately non of them would work out for Petersen. Logan Beattie is the 2014 NRA Junior Breakaway Roping Champion. Congratulations Logan hope to see you going down the road next year.

Meet Your 2014 NRA Saddle Bronc Riding Champion

Saddle Bronc rider Phillip Shields had a great summer.  He finished the regular season with $7,142.03 won.  Phillip knew he had the 2014 NRA Saddle Bronc Riding sealed up before even driving to Butte.  He wasn’t done there and went on to win the 1st round with a 74.5 aboard Big Circle Rodeo Company’s 74 Wibaux, which was good enough for $700.  Unfortunately the Dillon cowboy’s hot streak ended there.  He finished the year with $7,842.03 won. Congratulations Phillip on your 2014 NRA Saddle Bronc Riding title. We hope to see you headed down the road again in 2015.

Meet Your 2014 Junior Barrel Racing and Junior All Around Champion

I don’t think there is anymore to say about Shai McDonald. The Gardner cowgirl had another outstanding year in the NRA.  Coming into the 2014 NRA Finals she had not one but two titles with her name on them, but she wanted some spending money to go with the prizes.  Shai split the first round in the barrels with the 2013 NRA Junior Barrel Racing Champion Tayla Moeykens.  McDonald went on to place 3rd in the 2nd round as well as the average, boosting her lead by over $1000.  She then went and got her breakaway rope and placed 4th in the 1st round with a 3.5 second run, making her lead in the All-Around jump by more than $1800.  Congratulations Shai on another very successful year.

Wilma Marie Masterson Lande

Wilma Marie Masterson Lande, to know her was to love her. Wilma passed away peacefully and in the comfort of her home on the sunny afternoon of Dec. 6, 2014.

Wilma was born Sept. 18, 1936, in Pryor, to William and Victoria Masterson. She attended Pryor Grade School and went on to graduate from Edgar High School. She married her longtime sweetheart, Donnie J. Lande (DJ), and together they had one daughter, Vickie May Lande. They engaged in ranching as a family with D.J.’s parents, George and Annie Lande, until D.J.’s passing in 1977. Wilma and Vickie continued to run the ranching operation until 1985, when C.R. Boucher ventured north to live and work on the ranch. C.R. and Wilma lived happily together for 29 years.

Wilma was known for many things, most notably being her skill as a gardener, her world-famous cooking and hospitality, and of course her fierce independence.

She is preceded in death by her father, William; mother Victoria; sister Blanche; and her husband D.J. She is survived by her partner C.R. Boucher; daughter Vickie MacCarty; grandson Wylie Warneke; granddaughter Ali Gauger; great-granddaughters Brooke Warneke and Gwendolyn Gauger; close nieces Gail Indreland and Terry Kane; and many close extended family members.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chase Hawks Memorial Association and Coles Western Wishes. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Michelotti-Sawyers, 1001 Alderson Ave., with a celebration of life to follow at Gusicks Restaurant.

JD Hutchinson

A Funeral Service for Jay Dee “JD” (Heidi) Hutchinson, 56, of Wibaux, MT will be 12:00 p.m. Thursday, December 4, 2014, at the Wibaux County High School Gymnasium in Wibaux.  For those who want to take one last ride with JD, you are welcome to bring a horse and follow the horse drawn carriage to the Wibaux Exhibit Hall following the service.

Visitation for JD will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Wibaux.

JayDee passed away unexpectedly on Friday, November 28, 2014 at his ranch north of Wibaux. MT with his dog, Dakota and his Dad’s dog, Pepper at his side.

Jay Dee “JD” Hutchinson was born March 27, 1958 to Glenn & Bonita “Bonnie” Arlene Smith Hutchinson in Glendive, MT.  JD was raised on the family ranch north of Wibaux.  He attended school in Wibaux until March of 1977, when he moved to Cody, Wyoming where he graduated from high school.  JD returned to Wibaux and worked as rough neck in the oil field, for Smith Cattle Company and on the race track.  After getting hurt on the oil rig, he returned to the family ranch to help his father.

In 1982, JD fell in love with Heidi Cox and they have been together for 32 years.  Heidi tells the story of getting on the school bus in the 6th grade and the only seat left was one with JD.  Who knew back then what this would lead to?  JD started rodeoing at the age of eight when he competed in Little Britches rodeos and high school rodeos.  He competed in all three rough stock events and roping.  JD was a great team roper; however he put his team roping on the back burner so he could take his kids rodeoing.

JD was so proud of his kids.  He even had a MHSRA coat that said “Shae’s Dad.”  After the kids were done with high school rodeo, JD started judging rodeos.  JD was willing to help any kid in the rodeo arena and was a babysitter for his adopted children; Kaci Jo and the Tousignant boys. JD passed his love for hunting “the big buck” to his son, Tyler and the love of ranching and roping to both Tyler & Shae.  Heidi was the love of his life; he would do anything for her from helping coach volleyball, making Christmas goodies, to this year cooking Thanksgiving dinner.  JD was a man of very few words and smiles, except for the children in his life and his new grandson, Kacin.  He was never without a rope, a good horse, and a cow dog at his side.  At the time of his death, JD was Wibaux County Weed Supervisor, a director for the Cowboy Hall of Fame, and a rodeo judge.  He had just bought the family ranch and was working it with Heidi, Tyler, Shae and his sister, Bev.

God must have needed another good cowboy, so he called JD to come cross the great divide to be with his dad, where they are ranching and roping in that big arena in the sky.  JD was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters.  He is survived by his wife, Heidi; son, Tyler; daughter, Shae (Dale) Peplinski; his pride and joy grandson, Kacin Paul; his faithful dog, Dakota; sister ,Beverly Hutchinson of Miles City, MT; one uncle, Keith Hutchinson of Gillette, WY; his special kids, Kaci Jo Hougland, Ty, Colton and Chas Tousignant; and two other siblings.

A memorial rodeo scholarship fund has been established in memory of J.D. at Stockman’s Bank in Wibaux.

Meet Your 2014 NRA Steer Wrestling Champion

For Parker Bignell the 2014 regular rodeo season was not what he was hoping for, with barely making it into the NRA finals by just under $100 over Will Powell.   Parker relooked his strategy and went back to the drawing board with cousin Ty Erickson, a 2014 NFR Qualifier.  After the first night of the 2014 Finals the Hall cowboy set the pace at 3.9 to win the round.  Thinking this is how the summer should have gone he fed off of it and continued to knock on the door by placing 2nd in the 2nd round and 3rd in the 3rd Round.  His total average time on 3 head was 11.5 seconds, a second and a half over Kevin Peterson, making Parker Bignell the average champion.  I guess you could say that winning the average was just one of his goals.  Parker Bignell won $2625.00 at the NRA Finals alone, that was more then he won in the regular season, which skyrocketed him into 1st place in the 2014 Year End Standings.  Congratulations Parker, this is sure to be one of many titles in your future.

Meet Your 2014 NRA Bull Riding Champion

The NRA Bull Riding was a battle back and forth all year long between Jess Lockwood and Tanner Theriault.  Coming into the NRA Finals Lockwood was $1,270.30 behind Theriault.  Jess knew Tanner wasn’t going to hand it over to him on a silver platter.  After the first round Lockwood was now only $920 behind.  Theriault put the heat on in the 2nd round riding his bull first and scoring 81.5, Lockwood now had to post a score higher to keep the year-end title in sight. The Volberg native posted the highest score of the weekend with an 86.5 aboard Big Circle Rodeo Company’s Twisted Tea.  Coming into the 3rd and final round there were so many factures that needed to be just right for either Theriault or Lockwood to win a title; one needed to ride to keep the championship, the other needed to ride and win to take the championship from the other, if both rode it was going to come down to that last penny won.  After Lockwood watched Tanner just miss the buzzer in the last round he knew he had to just hang on for 8 seconds and the 2014 Bull Riding Championship was his.  Jess did more than just hang on he won the final round with a 80.5 ride and won the average putting him at the top of the year end standings by $479.70.  Congratulations Jess Lockwood on your 2014 NRA Bull Riding Championship.  We know there will be more Championships in your near future.

The young gun Callie Otoupalik led the field of 10 going into the 2014 Northern Women’s Rodeo Association Finals Breakaway Roping by $456.81 over the veteran Jaley Hitchcock leaving the year-end title coming down to three rounds and the average.  Jaley, the Roundup native who now calls Dupree home, won the first round with a 2.8 moving her into the drivers seat.  Riding the 2014 NWRA Breakaway horse of the year “Roanie” she didn’t stop there; placing 2nd in the 2nd round and winning the 3rd round making her the only one to catch 3 head.  Hitchcock won $2,975.00 at the finals shooting her straight to the lead for the year-end Ladies Breakaway title.  Congratulations Jaley and Ronnie on your success throughout the year and your 2014 NWRA Breakaway Championship!

Meet Your 2014 NWRA Barrel Racing Champion

Coming into the 2014 Northern Women’s Rodeo Association Finals, Kaela Murphy was sitting 6th by just a little over $1000 out of first place.  To win a year-end title wasn’t completely out of her reach but she was going to have to make herself known in the Butte Civic Center.  She did just that, winning the first round by just over a tenth of a second boosting her from 6th to 4th place.  Murphy, the Helena native, was not done there; she went on to win the 2nd and 3rd rounds making it easy to figure out who won the average.  Winning over $3,100 at the finals alone Kaela moved from 6th to 1st for the year-end title. It goes to show it's not over till the last girl runs.  Congratulations Kaela Murphy on your first NWRA Ladies Barrel Racing year-end title we are sure there will be more to come in the near future.
